Country living at its best! That is the only way to describe this beautiful home and property nestled away in the hills of Thaxton, Virginia. This property contains approximately 575 feet of frontage on Buffalo Run Road. The home on this property originally built circa 1900 has been expanded on, upgraded and very well maintained over the years and is one of the most charming country homes we have seen. There is approximately 1550 square feet of living space that includes 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The living room at the front of the home is very cozy and has a beautiful stone fireplace with a wood stove. There is a large open, county kitchen that leads into the dining room. There is also a large sunroom that is perfect for visiting with friends and family, reading a book, or enjoying the wildlife in the pasture and stream beside the home. A mudroom off the side of the home and partial basement provides approximately 450 square feet of additional storage. Outside storage is also available with a 10×16 shed and an old barn that sits near the house.

The property that surrounds this home is a good mix of rolling pasture and woods that contains several streams. There is plenty of game sign throughout the property because it is perfect habitat for wildlife. There is plenty of edge, cover and corridors for bedding and travel. This habitat also supplies food and water needed to hold wildlife on your property that you can enjoy from your home or from a tree stand. There is more than enough room to roam on this property with all the pastures and trails, which makes it the perfect property if you are looking for a place to keep your horses or to start a farm.

There are many unique aspects contained in the hills of this property that make it very special. The Blue Ridge Mountain views are one of its best features. From the home and from several other sites on the property there are amazing views of Sharp Top Mountain and Taylors Mountain. Sharp Top Mountain is very distinct with a pointed rocky outcrop at its peak and it is also one of the Peaks of Otter Mountains. These mountains are very unique and the most recognizable landmarks in Bedford County. Local history can also be found on this property. Lying in the middle of one of the pastures at the top of the hill from the house is an old cemetery that is the resting place of James H. Welch and his wife Mary P. Welch. James was a local Civil War Confederate Soldier that served in Company H of the 34th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The 34th Virginia was organized in May 1862 and for almost two years the unit served as heavy artillery. Then in May 1864 the 34th was assigned as infantry that participated in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and saw action in various conflicts around Appomattox.

There are many opportunities for recreation within a short drive from this property. The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Peaks of Otter National Recreation Area that surrounds Sharp Top and Flat Top Mountains are close by. This Recreation Area is one of the most visited areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here you can enjoy camping and hiking and there is also a lodge with a restaurant and gift shop. At the base of Sharp Top Mountain you will also find the Peaks of Otter Winery where you can enjoy mountain views while sampling one of the many fruit wines they are known for. The Jefferson National Forest is also a short drive from this property and provides hundreds of thousands of acres to explore through hiking, camping, hunting and fishing in some of Virginias most scenic, stocked trout streams.

Even though this property is in a quiet county setting the town of Bedford and cities of Roanoke and Lynchburg are within a short drive where you can enjoy history, shopping, movies, concerts, sporting events, wineries, breweries and unlimited dining opportunities.

Joel’s love for the outdoors started at a young age in the mountains and steams of northeastern Pennsylvania. As a child, it was simple walks in the woods with his Father observing wildlife and foraging for wild berries that sparked his passion for wildlife, land, and conservation. That passion continued to grow as he got older. He started chasing trout in those cold mountain streams and spending more time in the outdoors alone, but when he was 12 years old and his Grandfather took him whitetail hunting for the first time, that is when his outdoor passion became an obsession. “I can remember everything about that day. I remember the anticipation and the excitement. I remember how cold it was and I remember following my Grandfather through the woods to sit on that old stone wall. I remember all the deer and wildlife we saw that day. We never got a shot, but that day will stay with me forever and that is what it is all about.” Joel joined the United States Air Force when he was 22 and he spent the next 20 years on active duty but continued pursuing his obsession in his off time while stationed in South Carolina, Virginia, and North Dakota. He volunteered with managing wildlife and property on military installations throughout his career and managed a 400 acre private hunt club in King and Queen County Virginia for 9 years. At the end of his Air Force career and in anticipation of his career after active duty, Joel’s love for wildlife and conservation drove him to complete a BS degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Fish and Wildlife Management from American Military University in 2015. Joel’s volunteer work with the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Mule Deer Foundation while stationed in North Dakota also led him to become part of the Mossy Oak ProStaff Team in 2015. Joel retired from the Air Force in 2017 and returned to his wife Jennifer, their dogs and home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Bedford, Virginia where he continues to represent Mossy Oak on their ProStaff Team. He is continuing his volunteer work by serving as a committee member of both the Bedford Outdoor Sportsman’s Association and the Botetourt Longbeards National Wild Turkey Federation chapter. He also volunteers with the Bedford Whorley Ducks Unlimited chapter and the Virginia Hunters for the Hungry program. Joel continues to pursue his obsession which now also includes being right at home as part of the Mossy Oak Properties Team helping others realize their dreams of owning a special piece of property so that they too may pursue their outdoor obsessions. Joel’s education, love for the outdoors and conservation, and his dedication to the Mossy Oak brand make him a perfect fit as part of the Mossy Oak Properties of Virginia Team.
