Earlier this week my brother, father, and Bryan DeHart planned a fishing trip for red drum on the Pamlico Sound. Bryan is well-known for his knowledge of fishing for various fish species along the North Carolina coast, so he was our go-to guy for a great day on the water. With my father’s birthday quickly approaching, my brother, Bradley, and I thought it would be a great idea to spend some time on the water chasing drum with him.
The afternoon fishing trip was planned amidst a sketchy weather forecast and we drove through more rain than clear skies on the way towards the coast. Luckily about the time we hit the water the skies cleared up. While the clouds would occasionally darken, we somehow managed to avert any rainy weather all afternoon on the water.
The fishing was great and it was all new to us Walters’ who have rarely ventured out into the sound fishing. Bradley, my father, as well as myself were blessed to have each landed two drum. Plenty of photos were taken and the fish were soon released. The largest was my father’s which was estimated to weigh approximately 47 lbs.
Having spent plenty of time fishing over the years with my father and brother, we thought it was amazing to catch such large fish. We are very familiar with catching various types of panfish, catfish, and largemouth bass in local ponds and rivers, but none of us had ever caught anything like the red drum we landed Tuesday. There’s no doubt we were truly blessed to have had such a great afternoon on the water as well as an experienced guide.
Around dusk I landed the last fish of the day. The boat ride soon began as well as the two hour drive home. When it was all said and done, we all had a blast on the water. The fish that were caught and released were just a bonus.
While most outdoorsmen are primarily focused on hunting this time of year, don’t forget about the various types of fishing that can be done. North Carolina is a sportsman’s mecca and offers more hunting and fishing opportunities than a few. Also, don’t forget to take a kid fishing or hunting when you can. Every outdoorsmen had someone who at one point took the time to teach them to cast a reel or shoot a gun. I am lucky enough to not only have been taught to hunt and fish by my father, but also have a brother who is a great hunting and fishing buddy. Take the time this fall to pass it on. You, as well as the person you take will forever be grateful.
